The D&E Skipjack is one of the neatest model submarines on the market today. The simplicity of operation and incredible maneuverability makes this the ideal beginners model. Most beginners have problems actually operating model submarines, because they are usually tied up with the misconception that they need to operate forward planes and ballast tanks.
This boat will operate fantastically on a four channel radio, with the forward planes set to horizontal, not connected to a servo. Trimming the boat to have 1/4" of the sail above the water, with the ballast tank full, will ensure the boat surfaces in any emergency. A Snort system is a useful addition.
All the operator has to do is set the speed to slow ahead, and FORGET the ballast system. Just using the right-hand dive/surface control will be enough to immediately put the boat into a deep dive, or make it surface. Its turning capability is stunning, even in a small 15' diameter pool. With a length of 32" and a beam of 4", this model is impressive in a pool, yet because it will turn on a dime, it will give the novice plenty of fun in any restricted area.
The hull is made from an phenol novolac epoxy resin, with a fiberglass reinforcement. The resin is laid up into the finely detailed mold, a layer of fiberglass is placed into the liquid resin, and then a solid plug is place on top. Once the mold is shut, the plug pushes the resin into the detail of the mold and into the fiberglass. The end result is an extremely thin yet strong hull, with much more detail than ever possible with normal fiberglass techniques.
